ไม้ล้มลุก ทอดเลื้อยปกคลุมดินหรือพันไม้อื่น ลำต้นเป็นสัน สามเหลี่ยม มีปีกแคบๆ ใบ เดี่ยว รูปไข่กว้างหรือแกมรูปหอก กว้าง 2-8 ซม. ยาว 3.2-10 ซม. ปลายใบแหลม โคนใบเว้า รูปหัวใจ ท้องใบมีขนปกคลุมแน่น ดอก สีขาว ออกเป็นช่อหรือดอกเดี่ยว ตามซอกใบ ก้านช่อดอกยาว 1-1.5 ซม. ดอกบานกว้างถึง 5 ซม. กลีบรองดอกซ้อนกัน 5 กลีบ 2 กลีบนอกสีเขียวอมแดง มีขน 3 กลีบในสีเขียว กลีบดอกเชื่อมกันแผ่เป็นรูปกรวย ปลายกลีบหยัก เว้าตื้น เกสรผู้ 5 อัน ติดบนหลอดกลีบดอก รังไข่รูปกรวยคว่ำ ผล แห้งแล้วแตก รูปกึ่งกลมมีช่องเปิด 4 ช่อง เมล็ด มี 4 เมล็ด สีดำเกลี้ยง

Prostrate or twining herb; stem triangular, narrowly winged. Leaves simple, broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3.2-10 cm long by 2-8 cm wide, pubescent on lower surface; base cordate; apex acute to acuminate. Inflorescence axillary, solitary to few flowered cyme; peduncle 1-1.5 cm long. Flowers white, ca. 5 cm across; calyx 5,2 outer seeds reddish-green and pubescent outside, 3 inner ones green; corolla funnelform, undulate and shallowly crenate at margin; stamens 5, included, inserted on the corolla tube; ovary conical. Fruit capsule, depressed globose; operculum separated from the endocarp, 4 valved. Seeds 4, dull black, glabrous.

พบขึ้นในเขตร้อนของแอฟริกา อินเดีย จีน เอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้และญี่ปุ่น ในประเทศไทย พบเกือบทุกภาค ตามชายป่าผลัดใบ หรือพื้นที่เปิดและชื้นริมถนน หรือริมลำธาร ออกดอกช่วงเดือนตุลาคม-เมษายน

Tropical Africa, India, China, Southeast Asia and Japan. In Thailand, found throughout the country, by the edges of deciduous forests, open areas, along road-sides or by streams. Flowering from October to April.

น้ำยางในราก ใช้เป็นยาระบายอ่อนๆ

Milky sap from its root is a mild laxative.
